If you’re searching for the ideal beach for your Mexican vacation, Cozumel or Isla Mujeres are both fantastic choices. Their white sandy shores and calm, crystal clear waters make these two islands ideal.
Both Isla Mujeres and Cozumel are popular destinations for visitors from around the world. The islands offer an array of activities and restaurants to suit everyone’s taste.
Cozumel stands as Mexico’s best beach destination due to its size and diversity of public beach spaces. Additionally, Cozumel boasts some of the best reefs for snorkeling and diving in Mexico, such as El Cielo, Dzul Ha, Colombia, Paraiso, Villa Blanca, Chankanaab, and Santa Rosa.
Conversely, Isla Mujeres is a smaller island that’s less crowded and provides easier access to its beaches. Furthermore, these more secluded shores make it an ideal option for families and couples looking to escape the crowds.
On Isla Mujeres, there are plenty of breathtaking beaches to choose from; Playa Norte (North Beach) stands out for its crystal-clear water and soft sand. Plus, this historic site and eco-park, Hacienda Mundaca, features ancient ruins as well as winding paths through it.
On the west coast of Isla Mujeres, there is a government and privately-funded sea turtle sanctuary where visitors can learn more about these remarkable creatures. Additionally, there are several hotels with pools and beach bars nearby.
Cozumel and Isla Mujeres are generally safe tourist destinations, but it’s wise to watch your belongings closely and be alert for any suspicious activity. According to the United States Mexico travel advisory, certain parts of the Riviera Maya–Playa del Carmen, Tulum, Cancun, and Isla Mujeres–may experience criminal activity or violence.
